I received an email the other day from the Latin League. The email contained a link to an article I wrote last year. (Check it out here, if you don't already know.) The article was about abuse directed at me. Many men, women, and children are subject to the same type of abuse on the internet.
The author and I had never met, but the author sent me the link to my article and wrote that it had "opened a window" for him. His words, not mine.
How about you? Have you ever been the target of cyber abuse? Or, have you been the one doing the abusing?
The part of the email that got my attention most was the author saying the window had been opened for him. What if your abusive words or actions have been, at least in part, what "opened a window" for you?
I've been subject to a great deal of cyber abuse, but I have never been the cyber abuser. I've only been the object of it. My cyber bully is the "e" word. It doesn't appear to be a gender issue, but men and women seem to both be subject to the same types of cyber abuse.
I could tell you about all of the people I have encountered who have played that role. I could tell you how many times I have felt that if I didn't "do something" to defend myself, or how I thought if I didn't scream, they'd hurl their insults right through the computer screen and it would be my fault. But the "victim," isn't the one who can open that "window."
Often the abuser doesn't really want to hurt someone. He or she wants a reaction. He wants to know how the person will react to what he or she is saying. If it's a woman, he wants to know if she's going to cry. If it's a man, he wants to know if he's going to punch him. Or, he wants to know if he'll stand there, stare at him or walk away. If it's a child, he wants to know if he'll be in trouble.
He also wants to make himself feel big and powerful, to feel like he has the right to put people down.
