With digital cameras of all kinds and monitors with a resolution of at least 1024x768 pixels, Photoshop is one of the most commonly used photo-editing programs and is widely used to fix and enhance photographs from various camera devices and used for professional and personal projects. Photoshop is also used for web design, mobile design, and print design to name a few.
Quickly opening and saving an image
Adobe Photoshop is compatible with Macintosh computers and Windows PCs, but the operating system comes loaded with a program (Windows Photo Viewer) that's often preinstalled by the manufacturer.
Many people confuse the operating system and the program, and therefore don't realize they can use a free and safe program called Adobe Photoshop Elements (also available for Macintosh computers) to edit and save files using the operating system program. Figure 6-1 shows the Elements onscreen title, and the Main menu looks like the one in Figure 6-2.

Finding your way around
Photos in this book use Adobe Photoshop Elements 8.1. If you use a different version of Photoshop, you may notice a few differences. For example, in the previous version, a pop-up with a file name appeared when you double-clicked a photo or opened a file. The pop-up said something like, "Save Photoshop files as.psd" — not the modern way, I realize. (Thanks to David Alan Van Dyke for the heads-up on this glitch.)
With Elements 8.1, you can add new documents and edit existing documents by double-clicking them and see them onscreen as shown in Figure 6-3. The figure also shows a pop-up window that contains the file's name and type of file. (Because images in this book are in the.psd format, the figure shows a pop-up that says "Adobe Photoshop.")
  You can also see a pop-up window, the file's name, and the type of file (see the previous section). You have various tools at your disposal in the menu bar that enable you to access and work with the photos.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is a free photo-editing software for casual photographers and hobbyists. Like Photoshop Elements, it is an alternative to traditional Photoshop, but it gives you more control than Photoshop Elements. It’s designed to be used to manage and edit photographs and create collections. Like the desktop version, Lightroom uses virtual memory, so it can be used even on modest desktop computers. When you save a file, Lightroom doesn’t generate a.tmp file; it immediately creates a new copy, and updates all your photo-related information in the photo library automatically.
Adobe Photoshop has powerful features that most amateur photographers won’t use. Unfortunately, many new photographers consider the use of the full version of Photoshop to be essential to their work. Photoshop is simply too expensive for most amateur photographers, but Photoshop Elements does a good job of filling the gaps between that and Photoshop.
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is an excellent application for organizing and editing digital photos and digital images. It is designed to act like a quality photo album. It is the only photo management program that can open multiple files at the same time; and it has many useful features that help you manage and work with your photos and albums.
Adobe Photoshop is a huge software package. It can be overwhelming to new photographers. Adobe Photoshop Elements lets you import photos and edit them so that you can create professional-looking images.
Adobe Photoshop Elements offers a different working interface than traditional Photoshop, with a simplified menu system, a Save As feature to help you save your work when you’re ready, and tools that help you add and animate images. You can combine several images into a single file by just dragging and dropping them. You also have more control over the way Photoshop Elements works. For example, you can choose which tools to use by clicking with the cursor instead of typing a toolbar item’s name.
Adobe Photoshop is a huge software package, and it does not limit the number of people who can use it. As with Adobe Photoshop Elements, Photoshop has many features that new photographers don’t need. You can find great image-editing software for free.
