Introduction
Biophilia is the concept of humans having an innate connection with nature and benefitting from engagement with it. This concept has been an inspiration in many different aspects of design, and this project focuses on its incorporation into urban development, including city planning, offices, schools, and more, and how it can benefit the people inhabiting these spaces. This collection explores many reviews and studies focusing on the personal, environmental, and economic benefits of incorporating more green spaces and nature in the built environment. On the personal level it can decrease stress levels, lower mental health issues, speed up healing processes, improve productivity, and increase well-being and general feelings of happiness. On an environmental level it can improve air and water quality through filtration, increase biodiversity and offer habitats to smaller species, and decrease the heat island effect through things such as shade and insulation. Economically, it can help businesses be more productive and increase retail potential. When compared to cities that do not utilize biophilic city planning, many of these benefits are observed on a community and personal level and are seen as worth the cost (whether financial or otherwise). Overall, biophilic cities tend to have higher levels of livability and the inhabitants have an improved feeling of well-being. With more cities designed under this structure, people would be happier and healthier, both physically and mentally. The global carbon footprint would decrease, and much of the existing architecture and modern building structures would be more visually pleasant and therefore easier to enjoy.
