History
Development of AutoCAD began in 1977 as a direct result of an industry-wide survey conducted by the editors of Communications of the ACM, who sought a cadence for the evolution of industry standard specifications, and a set of specifications for the interaction of user applications with the system. The goal was to develop a better model for the integration of CAD systems with office workstations and eventually with network systems. AutoCAD was among the many applications developed in response to the initiative.
The original creators of AutoCAD, John Walker and Larry Ream, were employed at the time as consultants working for the computer graphics firm of Computer Graphics, Inc (CGI), based in the United States. Computer Graphics, Inc. already had experience in the design and development of CAD software. The company had written programs since 1973 on computers of the PDP-11 family, which was then considered a powerful and more versatile machine than the very similar Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) PDP-10. By 1977 the two companies had merged, and the former Computer Graphics, Inc. was operating under the new name of AutoDesk.
