I've become particularly curious about how allowing ourselves these emotions during research ties in with ethics in research. These emotions can be directly humanising of people in the past, reminding us that we are dealing with the lives and legacies of real people, and that we should act respectfully. It is intriguing that it is in medical history, where scholars deal more directly with bodies, that ethics of research is being developed more directly.

Beatriz Pichel wrote a beautiful blogpost how being struck by emotions in the archives shaped her research questions and how she behaved as a historian. Laura Sangha reflects in this post on how we perhaps should extend similar privacy to people from centuries ago as to those who still have living relatives.
