AutoCAD was first released for Windows in March 1984. In June 1985, AutoCAD for Windows became available on Apple Macintoshes. In July 1986, a price cut was made available, and in November of the same year, the price of AutoCAD was reduced from $699 to $499.
At the time of its release, AutoCAD was the first commercial 2D CAD program for personal computers. By the 1990s, the growth of CAD systems began to accelerate.
In the early 2000s, AutoCAD for Windows began receiving the Autodesk Certified Partner (ACP) label. From 2000 to 2009, approximately 800 companies became ACP certified.
AutoCAD has been used as the basis for over 300 patents, according to Autodesk.

Application programming interfaces (APIs)
AutoCAD provides a number of APIs for custom programming. These include AutoLISP, Visual LISP, VBA, and ObjectARX. These APIs are available on many platforms including Windows, Mac, and Linux.
AutoLISP 
AutoLISP was the first programming language used in AutoCAD. AutoLISP code can be used to automate AutoCAD commands, customize menus, add data to AutoCAD drawings, write macros, add new drawing commands, and more.  AutoLISP programs can also be embedded in AutoCAD drawings.

VBA is used to automate AutoCAD drawing functions, manage graphics settings, save and load drawing data, and perform many other tasks.
ObjectARX 
AutoCAD 2007 introduced ObjectARX as an object-oriented programming language. The ObjectARX object-oriented programming language is based on the programming model C++, and has a dynamic and object-oriented feature set, that brings many of the benefits of other object-oriented languages to AutoCAD.
In addition to being able to work with AutoCAD drawing data, objects, and variables, programmers can work with many other C++ programming tools in AutoCAD. These include working with the Windows API, creating custom commands, defining workflows, and creating graphical controls.
