In the early 1980s, while still an M.I.T. Ph.D. student, Thomas O'Rourke began designing small pocket computers for the building trades. One project involved creating a supermini industrial PC, which became the MITS Altair 8800. Altair 8800 software was among the first software projects to be developed for a personal computer platform, and although O'Rourke produced many groundbreaking applications for the Altair, he ultimately left the company in 1984.
After quitting MITS, O'Rourke started working with Altair Associates, where he designed a new PC platform based on the Intel 8080 microprocessor. The Altair CX16 had a small keyboard and a compact 16-color CGA graphics monitor and ran a version of the MS-DOS operating system. The software, developed by Altair Associates, was sold through computer stores and other distributors as shareware or as a boxed software product.
Microsoft founder Bill Gates saw Altair CX16 as a rival to IBM's PC. He considered it an opportunity to create an inexpensive PC that could be sold to small businesses. In November 1981, Microsoft and IBM signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to collaborate on the development of a PC system based on IBM's PC XT model. The two companies wanted to get the price of the CX16 down to as low as $500.
With the help of Altair Associates, Microsoft and IBM agreed to release a version of MS-DOS for the CX16 system. The IBM/Microsoft deal called for IBM to put $8 million into a research project, code-named Project Chicago, to produce an implementation of MS-DOS for the Altair, which was called the DOS/86.
Gates wanted Microsoft to produce an "an attractive-looking version of DOS for the CX16." A version of the MS-DOS for the CX16 was released in December 1982. Bill Gates, who was accompanying IBM and Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen at the time, was impressed with the app. "Paul Allen and I had never seen this version of DOS," he later recalled. "It was a beautiful piece of software. It had some good features and it was stable."
Although the DOS/86 was a promising product, Altair did not follow up with a version of its operating system for the PC. Instead, they released an updated version of the Altair BASIC programming language
