History 
AutoCAD's first release version was AutoCAD 1982, which was built to run on the Motorola 68000. A year later, when PCs became common, Autodesk released the next version, AutoCAD 1983. The first version to run on PC was AutoCAD 1984, which was available as a diskette-based app. PC-based AutoCAD was released in 1985. In 1986, the first version was available for the Apple Macintosh computer. When the Macintosh computer came out, most designers used a Xerox 9800 (a clone of the venerable Xerox 9100) for drafting.
The software can run on a variety of platforms including Macintosh, Windows, and Unix systems. It can also be run on a variety of system configurations, including a single workstation, multiple workstations, networks, or disk arrays.
Early AutoCAD releases (from 1982 to 1986) were built with Motorola 68000 CPUs. As the 68000 was obsolete by the time the app was released, a new architecture was introduced: the Motorola 68000-compatible 68000.
AutoCAD 7, released in 1988, introduced some new features and significant changes, including toolbars. AutoCAD 7 also introduced scripting features. With AutoCAD 7 and AutoCAD LT, now called AutoCAD, the name changed from AutoCAD to AutoCAD LT.
AutoCAD LT version 9 (released in 1998) introduced state-of-the-art features, such as support for multiple monitor systems. In 2002, AutoCAD LT version 9.0 was released, which added several new features, including the ability to run with a 32-bit operating system. AutoCAD LT version 10.0, released in 2009, introduced new features like shell-based drafting.
The Autodesk consumer/home version of AutoCAD LT, AutoCAD LT Basic, was first released in October 2009.
In addition to AutoCAD, Autodesk also produces a competing program called AutoCAD Mechanical. Autodesk claims that AutoCAD Mechanical is better for mechanical engineering applications, which Autodesk markets as its "Trenton group."
AutoCAD 2010 is now referred to as Autodesk AutoCAD and was released in October 2010. This version includes a revamped UI and improved 3D rendering capabilities. AutoCAD 2012 was released in October 2012. This version included major changes to the
