Functional Usage
AutoCAD is a fully featured CAD and drafting application that allows users to create, modify and manipulate two-dimensional drawings, drafting layouts, and 2D- and 3D-solid models, within a single window. Basic functions include creating, editing, deleting, and copying (duplicating) objects in two-dimensional and three-dimensional space. Geometric objects can be combined using the traditional orthogonal or axial rotation features. Objects can be moved to different locations, scaled, and rotated. They can be changed in color and texture, and their appearance can be altered through use of a large collection of visual styles and effects. In addition to traditional line, area and polyline drawings, AutoCAD also supports the drawing of the various types of 2D- and 3D-solid models, including box and shell drawings, solid surface models, as well as parametric and solid modelling.

AutoCAD uses the DEW file format to store the information of each drawing. A DEW file includes a header and a body. In the header, the drawing's information is stored and in the body, the drawing is stored as a collection of objects.
All models in a drawing can be stored in a DEW file and all views and drawing layers are visible to users. However, only the top-level model and the last drawing on a drawing shelf are visible on the interface.

When creating a drawing and adding objects to it, the drawing system creates references to the objects that it uses. When an object is inserted into a drawing the drawing system references it with a "ref#" symbol, for example ref#012345678901234 where the # is replaced with the drawing number of the drawing in which the object is inserted. When an object is deleted or moved, the object that it was referenced to is replaced with a reference to the deleted or moved object. When a drawing is opened in AutoCAD and imported into another software, the references that the drawing system creates are used in that software. These references are often very useful, however, they are time-consuming to work with.
References can be used to create data sources, reports, and to link the drawn objects. Referencing objects can also be done in the opposite direction. It is possible to create a reference between two existing objects and reference both of them to other objects.
There are two types of references in AutoCAD: internal references and external references. Internal references are references that are created when an object is created or inserted. An internal reference can be changed whenever the object is changed, even when it is updated, moved or deleted.
External references, on the other hand, are references created by AutoCAD itself. External references are usually created when a drawing is opened. They can be modified as often as they are necessary without changing the objects they reference. When a drawing is imported into another software, all external references are copied to the new file.
References have their own properties, and can be searched and displayed with their properties.
