History of AutoCAD
The first version of AutoCAD (1.0) was released to manufacturing companies in December 1982 as a desktop application running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. Autodesk sold the product under the name KeyCAD and marketed it as a tool for drafting and design. The goal was to sell the product to manufacturers of equipment ranging from earth-moving machines to bicycles. The first version of AutoCAD was not compatible with any other software programs.
The first version of AutoCAD, sold as a standalone program, was limited to use by a single CAD operator working at a separate graphics terminal. Later versions of AutoCAD were released as an add-on to CAD programs made by other software companies, such as AutoCAD LT. The first CAD applications were developed for the use of two-dimensional drafting and design, three-dimensional modeling, and computer aided design and drafting (CAD/CAM).
In 1991, Autodesk released AutoCAD LT as a cross-platform version of AutoCAD, which supported the use of two-dimensional (2D) graphics editing, 3D modeling, and 2D drafting. Autodesk later discontinued the development of AutoCAD LT in 1998 and replaced it with AutoCAD Premier.
In 1999, Autodesk introduced AutoCAD 2000, a major upgrade to AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT. AutoCAD 2000 introduced a new user interface (UI) and enhanced AutoCAD capabilities, including the ability to view the model in three dimensions. AutoCAD 2000 allowed users to design parts of a project, and generate a 3D model of the part and its assembly. The 2D, 3D, and 2D assembly capabilities of AutoCAD 2000 were integrated into a single software product, known as AutoCAD Architecture.
AutoCAD 2001, released in 2000, introduced a completely redesigned user interface that allowed the user to use a single application for both 2D and 3D drafting and design. Autodesk later discontinued the development of AutoCAD 2001, and replaced it with AutoCAD 2010.
AutoCAD 2003 and AutoCAD LT 2004, released in 2002, were updates to AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT that included new functionality, such as direct rendering of surfaces, automatically performing the tasks of both 2D and 3D modeling and dimensioning, and self-completing raster images. A feature

Raster graphics and vector graphics
Raster graphics, such as bitmap graphics, are used to display drawings in AutoCAD. Raster graphics can be used with all AutoCAD program elements. Vector graphics, such as geometric vector graphics (e.g. lines, curves, splines, circles and ellipses) are used to display drawings in AutoCAD, as well as to construct them. Vector graphics, such as lines, splines, circles and ellipses, are used to construct drawings. The drawing elements used to construct a drawing can be modified using the CUI (command user interface), which allows for a great degree of automation. AutoCAD supports the import, viewing, modification, and export of vector and raster graphics. In AutoCAD, you can choose from a wide variety of predefined command icons. Using the GUI commands, you can select an icon (e.g. to draw a line, to highlight or unhighlight a region, or to show or hide drafting grids), to execute a command (e.g. create a new drawing or open an existing drawing), to use a command editor (e.g. create a complex drawing or edit an existing drawing), or to edit a command (e.g. edit a command or open a command editor). You can also create new command icons, if you choose to do so.
