* **Start with Photoshop Elements.** The new, inexpensive program is a favorite of many people who want to create images and photo-manipulation effects but don't want to invest in Photoshop.
Elements is not meant for professionals — the focus is on creating images, not on mastering Photoshop. It's designed for people who want to create simple images that are basic enough for them to do it themselves. If you're comfortable with it, it's a great entry program. And in addition to being a great tool for creative types, it comes with a modest photo library, collections, and tools that are easy to learn. Figure 12-2 shows a desktop screen from the Elements start-up page.
To create an image in Elements, open an image file (JPEG, TIFF, or PDF formats are supported) and then click the Edit button on the Layers palette. (You can also make this change in the main menu's Image menu, where you find Edit ⇒ Adjustments ⇒ Enhance.) You see the image without its background by default. Now you need to create a new document with a background. Right-click and choose New from the context menu. Then choose a theme that you want. I chose a basic blue-gray one. You can always change your choice later (using the Theme menu), although I find the color pallet a good way to begin experimenting with your images.
The process is now the same as in other editing programs: Click where you want to create a new layer and enter the name of the new layer in the Name box that appears, as shown in Figure 12-3. (You can choose to create a new layer or create a named layer, also known as a _smart object_.) I created a new layer under the document background and gave it a name of _background._

Next, use the Brush tool to paint the new layer black (choose Edit ⇒ Fill and select Black in the drop-down menu) or any other color. You see a blue-colored box around the layer in the Layers palette. As you paint, the box changes as you create the new layer. Figure 12-4 shows this process and the color you paint.

Understanding the Photoshop Interface
When you open an image file in Photoshop Elements, you are given the option to apply one of the presets installed on your computer. If you don’t see the preset you want, you can download and apply a preset in the Presets Manager.
You can also use a custom preset. Custom presets are samples of the most useful or popular presets compiled into one file, created specifically for one type of image. There are over 300 preset files, and you can create your own to cover the images you take and edit.
The menus in Photoshop Elements have a blue outline. You can select any menu item by clicking in the center of the menu. The menus help you find your way around Photoshop Elements. You can customize the menus by changing the color of the outline around the menu items.
You can customize the look of Photoshop Elements. To do this, select View then Customize Colors to open the Settings dialog box. In the drop-down menu, select Elements | Preferences | Color. Click the small arrow next to the Color Settings pop-up button to choose a color for the menus. Click OK to Apply the Color Changes.
In the Color Settings dialog box, you can also adjust the Size of the button font, and the highlighting color of the fonts. You can set the look of the Paint Bucket brush by adjusting the Color of the paint bucket, and how it shows highlights. You can also select a pattern brush.
When you press the Ok button, or press Enter on your keyboard, the dialog box closes. The changes take effect immediately. You can always return to this settings dialog box by selecting the gear icon in the upper right hand corner of the Photoshop Elements window.
You can navigate between folders in Photoshop Elements using the File menu. You can access a preview of the image in the current folder by clicking the preview icon in the upper right hand corner of the window.
The elements in a folder are organized by date and by folder. You can apply the first preset or download a new preset to change the appearance of a new folder. You can also download new presets from the Web.
Editing your Photos with Photoshop Elements
The main tools are, of course, the basic drawing tools.
You can draw lines, shapes and paths. You can adjust the width of any of these lines by dragging and dropping. You can draw custom shapes by selecting the Shape tool in the Tools panel, and drawing.
