The original AutoCAD was a hardcopy (paper) program, designed to work on Hewlett-Packard's graphics terminals and HP-150, HP-155, HP-165, and HP-175 models. Version 1.0 was released in December 1982 with a full suite of 15 CAD commands. Autodesk also produced an AutoCAD Trainer CD-ROM, which is a set of training files and a reference book that included all of the available command names, their associated parameter values and other commands and options. In addition to the full version, AutoCAD also came in an "Express" version that was the same as the full version except for the absence of some features, and was priced at $200.
The full version was "dynamically linked" with each software update, meaning that when the software update was applied, it would update the source code and reprogram the graphics terminal to allow use of the new features. This is the only version of AutoCAD that can be updated from the original software to the current version.
One of the first things an AutoCAD user would do when starting a new project is print out the drawing and put the paper into the CAD drawing. During this process, all of the control points and lines drawn on the original drawing would be recorded in the new drawing.
After the initial print out, the user would use the command "unit-on" to draw all of the lines and circles, and the command "unit-off" to draw all of the control points. These commands were originally called "Print Unit" and "Unprint Unit" respectively. (The phrase "Print" and "Unprint" was first used in the application's debut in an AutoCAD-compatible program, the non-AutoCAD software StarWorks.)
A new drawing begins as a blank sheet of paper and no "unit" command has been issued. The first thing the user will do is draw a title block, usually with the "title" command. The title is a box that appears at the bottom-left of the drawing window, with a title bar and a "Print" button. If the "Print" button is pressed, the title will be printed out as a new sheet of paper.

Mac OS X 10.7, known as Mavericks, introduced the Rosetta Application Translator project (R.A.T.Project) to enable developers to create applications that run on Mac OS X using the PowerPC code in Rosetta.
On Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, an auto-updating layer of the Rosetta runtime was installed by default, so all applications targeting the PowerPC runtime required it. On Mac OS X 10.5, it was not included by default. In Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and earlier versions, Rosetta was a runtime required to run PowerPC software in 32-bit mode.

AutoCAD is used in several video games, including Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, Defender of the Crown, Black & White, and Truck Stop 2. It also forms the basis for an 8-bit arcade game on the Mac OS.
