Aishwarya Rai Bachchan plays Rupan, a widow from a poor family. Rupan is beautiful, her music is wonderful and she is intelligent. There is nothing that she is not capable of. Choki (Mammootty), Rupan's brother, is unkind to her. He pushes Rupan around and gives her the cold shoulder when she needs to talk to him.
 
 The film is directed by Rituparno Ghosh, who has worked in the past with such Bollywood stalwarts as Shankar. Rituparno's direction is very human, moving and sensitive.
 Choki is charming, but he is neither innocent nor naive. He is mature, intelligent and has great knowledge of life. His relationship with Rupan is beautifully played by Aishwarya. The chemistry between the two of them is wonderful.
 The musical score is simply wonderful. It is not often that one comes across a film with music that is so expressive of human emotions. This is true of Chokher Bali. Sajjad Ali's lyrics are absolutely moving and the music is one of the highlights of the film.
 Prosenjit Chatterjee plays Rupan's father. In the beginning, he is not very pleasant. But his feelings change as the story progresses.
 Udita Goswami plays Rupan's mother. She is kind and loving. Her warm and tender voice makes you feel close to her.
 The cinematography by Ashok Kumar, the makeup by Asha Sachdev and the editing by Babloo Sengupta are very good. The only let down is the lighting which seems to be overused.
 The film is written by Rituparno Ghosh and produced by Mohanlal.
