"Dad, I am quitting the force. If I don't make it, I will not work anywhere," Singh told him.
But instead of encouraging his son, Singh's father told him that even the country's most prestigious examinations like the UPSC exam for recruitment to the IAS and the National Defence Academy for the Indian Armed Forces were impossible to crack and one had to keep trying.
"He told me that the IAS was difficult but people could pass it. It's just not possible to crack the UPSC," Singh said.
Singh felt relieved that his father understood his problem and felt happy that he would continue to pursue the force.
When the exam time arrived, he did not feel nervous but he knew that the toughest part of the day was over.
"The tests were over, only the interviews were left and that was easy. It was like somebody turned a switch off," he said.
But there was another hidden, unspoken and silent factor.
Singh's rivals were already eyeing the coveted post. Maria told him that the battle for the post of Mumbai's police commissioner was between him and Sharma. "I was not scared but I was nervous. If I don't make it this time, I will lose this battle," he said.
His anxiousness was heightened when Maria told him that Sharma was sympathetic to him.
"When Umesh Chandra was commissioner, he was very close to me," Maria recalled. "
