In the summer of 2007, Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs said: “I’d like to see every application, every game, every book, every piece of music, every movie, everything available on your iPhone or your iPod touch”. However, five years later this has not yet happened. In a world where consumers used to pay for every application they used, we are faced with a paradox: There are billions of applications available, and the resulting overabundance of content can only be good for the consumer. However, it is also clear that just a handful of applications can make the most out of the available content.
Exactly at this point Apple introduced the App Store on the iPhone and with it created a new ecosystem for consumers, which is very different from traditional markets.
In order to sell apps, Apple does not force each developer to purchase a Mac or a PC and then install a Windows operating system. Instead, Apple sells iPhones and iPads to consumers, who then use iOS on a Mac. Apple does not charge for this, and thus they earn money indirectly through the purchase of the equipment they sell. This makes the iTunes store an excellent business proposition for Apple, which then makes each and every app in the store available for free.
The extent to which all apps are available in the store can not be accurately assessed because not all developers publish their apps. However, it is clear that most apps are available, and that they can be downloaded directly through iTunes or through the App Store itself.
According to Apple, they did not set out to sell apps for free. Instead, the App Store was created as an opportunity to create a new market that would not be limited to the distribution of content. This raises questions: Who are these developers that produce content for free? Who ultimately ends up paying the download fee in the end?
A study by StatCounter shows that one quarter of a billion users have already downloaded free apps from the App Store. A further three-quarter of a billion apps are listed, but currently free apps. This corresponds to almost 10 percent of the total installed base of iOS devices. On average, one out of every 100 users visits the App Store every day. This is a lot, but only five out of every 100 of those users actually buy an app.
