Development and early years
The origins of AutoCAD go back to 1968 when Industrial Designer Charles L. Pfister began work on a system to control drafting machines. By the summer of 1970, Pfister had completed a description of the system and at that time he was working on the hardware. By the late 1970s, Pfister had moved from drafting to computer-aided design, and at that time he was working on a system to control drafting machines.
