The input language for the parser generator is Lex-like, with minor extensions to make it easier for a parser generator to generate code and to handle recursive definition. GPPG provides several methods to help with resolving multiple rule heads for the same recurrence. These include a specialization, a conflict resolver, and preprocessor macros.

The grammar file must be stored in a file, for example the file grammar.bnf. The parser, lexer, scanner, and preprocessor grammars must be stored as files named grammar.parser.bnf, grammar.lexer.bnf, grammar.scanner.bnf, and grammar.preprocessor.bnf respectively.
The preprocessor syntax is optional, and you can use indenting to determine where to specify parameters. This example uses a prefix. If you do not wish to use parameters you can omit them from the preprocessor file.
