Transport around the city 
The fastest and best way to get around Hanoi would be taking a Motorcycle Taxis (Xe Om) as they are all around the city. 
One ride within 2km will cost around 20,000 to 30,000 dong = 66p to 99p .
Also most drivers don't speak English so have your destination written on a bit of paper to show them.
There is another popular n inexpensive way of travel which is by a Cyclo which are much better for touring the old quarters narrow streets.

And then there are buses 
 Buses are local with a yellow and red white and they have routs within the city and stop near or in front of famous attractions. 
They cost between 5,000 and 10,000 dong = 17p to 33p
