AutoCAD [Mac/Win] (Updated 2022)
The core development of AutoCAD continues to be a team of several hundred software developers at Autodesk. The group, located at various times in Irvine, CA and San Francisco, CA, oversees the testing, development, bug fixing, and support for the 2-million-plus AutoCAD users worldwide.
Autodesk has released a total of 11 AutoCAD releases between 1982 and 2018. AutoCAD R12 software, released in early 2019, will be the last upgrade in the current AutoCAD release line. After R12, Autodesk will no longer be providing new releases of AutoCAD, as well as releases of other products (e.g., Inventor, Revit, and 360 design), which will continue to be maintained and supported for current users.

AutoCAD History
In 1994 Autodesk introduced the first major redesign of AutoCAD. The aim of this new design philosophy was to reduce the number of user actions needed to enter a drawing.
The new user interface was based on best practices that had been recommended by leading expert users, from a survey by Autodesk, MIT, and the U.S. Army among the user community.
The new user interface was a step toward a feature-rich professional tool, and AutoCAD was renamed AutoCAD R16.
AutoCAD R16 was still essentially the same application with one major addition: its graphics were now hardware-accelerated. When an operator drew lines and filled in shapes, they were displayed in a snap-brick effect on the screen—the sort of "warped" appearance that you might see in an old 16mm movie.
This was an impressive feat for a two-person team, but it was not nearly enough to change the AutoCAD development paradigm. Software engineers had now used all of their creativity to produce a large, multi-million-dollar app that still could not do the job that most users wanted it to do.

 The drawing tools are usually supported via an application program interface (API) to application-specific software called a DLL. This is software that is installed to facilitate the opening and closing of drawings or the production of objects in the drawing. A DLL is usually provided with AutoCAD, sometimes as a part of the AutoCAD setup package, and by other software developers. This allows AutoCAD to work with third-party products such as CAD Manager, Autodesk Vault, and Syncplicity.
The Graphics Toolkit, and the associated AutoLISP and Visual LISP, is available in the graphics library as a standard interface. D3DX, developed by Microsoft, is also available and a variant of the Graphics Toolkit is available as a part of Windows 7 and Microsoft Windows 8 and includes OpenGL graphics.
History 
Autodesk AutoCAD version 1 was released on March 31, 1990. It was originally targeted at drafters, and included the ability to draw 2D and 3D objects. As it was originally developed by the then-newly formed Autodesk, it lacked a number of features found in later releases, such as multiuser functionality and editing of parts and assemblies.
In 1993, the first print edition of AutoCAD was released.
Autodesk AutoCAD version 1.3 was released on June 1, 1994.
In 1994, Autodesk AutoCAD version 2.0 was released. It added a web browser-based interface for connecting to files and drawings (i.e., Internet access to drawings) and editing of parts and assemblies.
In 1995, Autodesk AutoCAD version 2.1 was released. The following are some notable new features in this release:
 Multiuser capability.
 Drawings can be edited in the drawing file or on the fly.
 New drawing tools, including spline (curve), text, and insert objects.
 Interactive annotation and viewing tools.
 New command line interface (CLI).
 Display of proportional, absolute, and fixed dimensions.
 Previewing of 3D drawings in paper space.
 Two new file formats, the DXF (Drawing Exchange Format) and DWS (Direct Web Site).
In 1996, Autodesk AutoCAD version 2.3 was released.
