MP4. Let’s get one thing clear from the start — this is not a review of Black Mirror, a popular show that’s often criticized for its unpredictable nature and weird plots. I love the show, and though I’m a little too young to appreciate it, I’m not ashamed of that. Is Black Mirror worth watching? I will never tell you that. Do you want to know what I can say for sure? Black Mirror is absolutely fantastic.
– Episode 20, The National Anthem – at nightfall – the weather has changed, the sun is setting and a school is about to go dark. Kim’s parents have just arrived, and to make matters worse, they ask that Kim leave the school and stay with them for the night. We soon learn that his parents are now parents themselves, and as such, they have moved out to where Kim lives, to the ranch. His childhood home, the old house, has been torn down and replaced with a new home. Kim says he hates it, and that’s why he doesn’t come here anymore.
Katie struggles to find purpose for her life beyond being a high school student, while Abby struggles to keep her life together in the face of constant bullying. It turns out that the Circle of Life is a coming of age film that depicts the struggles of ordinary teenagers. Throughout the course of the film, we are told that the protagonist’s life in high school has consisted of crushing disappointments, failing to find purpose, and being bullied. The film encourages its viewers to keep in mind the struggles of their own high school years and in doing so, to reflect on the values that are currently guiding their lives. In doing so, the protagonist(s) of the film see that they can come to value themselves more than they currently do and are able to pursue activities that they value. The protagonist(s) of the film can reflect upon their life’s purpose, value their friendships and engage in activities that they find meaningful. In the process, they can find purpose in life and help others to do the same.
With the release of The Circle of Life, Jacobs and his filmmaking team are inspired to share some important life lessons that many can relate to.
