AutoCAD was originally developed and marketed by Graphisoft (Autodesk’s original name) in Germany before being acquired by Autodesk in 1988. The first mainstream-level CAD software was released by GRAPHIC-DOCKS, Inc. in 1983 as a desktop and printer-based program called GRAPHIC-DOCKS. AutoCAD V.2 was released in 1985 as a desktop application for the Apple IIgs and Apple IIe. AutoCAD V.3 was released in 1986 as a desktop application for the Apple II, Lisa and Macintosh. In 1987, Graphisoft was acquired by British computer company Acorn Computers. In 1988, Acorn (now the Arcadis group) was acquired by Autodesk and Graphisoft, and the first production version of AutoCAD, AutoCAD 1.1, was released that same year. AutoCAD 1.2 was released in 1989 and AutoCAD 1.3 in 1991.
In 1992, Autodesk bought the assets of the GRAPHIC-DOCKS company, and a special version of GRAPHIC-DOCKS, the GRAPHIC-DOCKS Z80, was produced for the ZX Spectrum personal computer. In 1993, AutoCAD 2.0 was released, followed by AutoCAD 2.1, AutoCAD 2.2, AutoCAD 2.3 and AutoCAD 2.4 in 1994.
