Say you're a wealthy inheritor of some land in rural America with a sort of aristocratic sense of entitlement. You find that there's some sort of labor shortage in your neck of the woods. You lay in the groundwork, befriending state reps from your state's delegation, then organize all of your relatives and (if you're really lucky) your old college fraternity buddies for a donor meeting and campaign for your bill. Nigel Lawson denies reality of climate change

NIGEL Lawson doesn’t believe in man-made climate change but says we should still be trying to slow global warming. In an interview, he denied that politicians should be gambling with the future of humankind.
“I am prepared to put my own reputation on the line in order to warn people about the dangers of such behaviour,” he says. “I think it is dangerous to put one’s reputation on the line on this issue when there are so many more pressing issues.”

That’s right: Nigel Lawson doesn’t think global warming is a problem. But he is prepared to put his reputation on the line by warning people of the dangers.
Others think the world is heating up at a dangerous rate, but the government of the day isn’t prepared to tackle the problem. It is instead cutting carbon emissions at the expense of the poorest people in the world, who would be hardest hit by rising temperatures.
Lawson was sacked as Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1990 after an inquiry found he lied to MPs about his financial dealings while he was in Downing Street. He was later cleared of wrongdoing by the tribunal that investigated him for the British Board of Trade.
Politicians claiming to be climate-friendly should do more to support the idea that global warming is real, Lawson says.
