The original design of AutoCAD was for drafting, but in 1992 the first release was the program for drafting, design and presentation of 2D and 3D civil engineering work, as well as architecture and interior design. In 1994, the first public release was the general version of AutoCAD.

Improved performance when working with large drawings, reduced memory usage and new features for editing and merging drawing objects were added to AutoCAD.
Other CAD software providers, like ESRI and UGS, had released similar functionality before. ESRI and UGS had products for AutoCAD that allowed for objects to be edited and merged and made their drawings more interactive.

With the ability to add type and text to drawings, AutoCAD went from a drafting program to a powerful tool for drafting, design and presentation of 2D and 3D civil engineering work.

AutoCAD's mainframe version, released in 1990, was the first major desktop CAD program to include a CD-ROM with its product. By 1993, all desktop CAD programs had been either released on CD-ROMs or designed so the software and its information would be on CD-ROMs.
AutoCAD R3 was released in the first half of 1992. AutoCAD R3 allowed drawings to be shared and opened from anywhere on the Internet.

New types of objects, such as piping, electrical systems and text, were added to AutoCAD, along with new commands that make drafting and the design of work easier.

Autodesk Animate, Autodesk Design Review and Autodesk Revit, Autodesk manufacturing systems, Autodesk life cycle management, Autodesk civil engineering tools and Autodesk Enterprise Architect.
AutoCAD also uses other CAD formats for file exchange with its drawing manager.  Originally released as an add-on for AutoCAD LT, these are now natively supported by AutoCAD, and a wide variety of other 3D modelling software. Among these formats are:
 dxf, a two-dimensional drafting format and a native interchange format for AutoCAD, used for 3D modelling.
 dgn, a specification of a graphical language for 2D drafting, written by and for the Drafting and Graphic Standards Committee of the American National Standards Institute, (ANSI) originally released as a conformant editable drawing format by Micrografx for AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT.
AutoCAD maintains a version history, and stores a backup of all drawings and files in its project archive. It can be used to revert to a previous state of the project if an error occurs.
 Mac version 
AutoCAD was first released on Apple Macintosh computers in March 1990. While the Mac version of AutoCAD was designed from the start to run natively on the platform, there were many obstacles to this. The starting program was an Amiga application developed by Peter Schmid, which was simply transferred to the Mac by one programmer, Jim Brady.  It was also poorly documented, for example, it took several manual scans of the manual for the user to figure out how to use the program.  While AutoCAD for Windows had been provided with a three-button mouse, no such mouse was offered for the Mac.  It was the only non-Windows version of AutoCAD offered at the time.
 AutoCAD is now offered by Autodesk. After it was acquired by Autodesk, they ported AutoCAD from the Amiga platform to the Microsoft Windows platform, and also released an updated, open-source version for macOS. The software uses a modified version of the Microsoft.NET Framework.  Although the software has been ported, it is only available for Windows. Autodesk does not sell any software for macOS.
Currently AutoCAD LT is only available for Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, while AutoCAD Professional is only available for Windows.
