#FreeThePeopleDay 2018

In December 2017, Mariame Kaba (@prisonculture) spontaneously organized #FreeThePeopleDay and called on people to donate the cost of a drink on New Year’s Eve to their local community bail or bond fund. These are community efforts that raise money to purchase the freedom of their neighbors from local county jails and immigration detention. Ultimately, over $230,000 was donated to funds in 2017! This year, Mariame and a team of supporters upped their game and their goal: First, they raised over $160,000 in matching funds in advance of New Year's Eve. The goal was to double every dollar donated directly to a local bail or bond fund on New Year's Eve, which is actual #FreeThePeopleDay. On New Year's Eve, thousands of individual donors gave more than $250,000 to nearly 50 community bail and bond funds. Combined with the matching funds, #FreeThePeopleDay 2019 raised over $400,000 to free people from wealth-based incarceration and further the movements to #EndMoneyBail and #EndDetention.
