The main idea behind AutoCAD is to make engineering and drafting easy for CAD operators. Today, AutoCAD has become a core part of the architectural, construction, engineering and product design process. Currently, more than 18 million licensed copies of AutoCAD are used by more than 900,000 individual users worldwide.
In 1982, shortly after the first release of AutoCAD, the software was named the world’s “Best Engineering Software” by Engineering & Design magazine and the “CAD of the Year” in the Journal of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (JAMIE). In 1983, AutoCAD won a U.S. Patent awarded to the Randal C. Miller and Jack E. Ganssle, the two developers of AutoCAD, and named as their development trademark “Autodesk”. In 1984, the U.S. Patent was again renewed. Since then, the software has won nearly 20 similar patents, sometimes referred to as “AutoCAD Patents”.
In 2018, AutoCAD hit version 184, which is the version 20.1 of the software. The version number may be related to the fact that it was written in 1982.
AutoCAD Basic (Edit or View)
The first version of AutoCAD was named AutoCAD Basic.
Basic had most of the basic features of AutoCAD and was released in October 1982. It was the precursor to AutoCAD 1983, AutoCAD 1984 and AutoCAD 1986.
The AutoCAD Basic version of AutoCAD was marketed as an “easy-to-use professional drafting program”. It included two windows: one for drafting, the other for viewing the previous drawing.
Although it was not a native drawing program, it was capable of generating native or DWG file format drawings.
While the basic version of AutoCAD only supported 2D drawings, it could also import or save AutoCAD DWG files.
Unlike today’s AutoCAD, AutoCAD Basic did not have any scripting language.

The outbreak was the largest and deadliest ever in the U.S. Last year, the storm system spawned the most powerful tornado on record, a single-day outbreak that killed 24 people and damaged some 1,600 homes.
But a May 8-9 outbreak may have killed more. A state-by-state tally of fatalities as of Wednesday morning showed 16 deaths in Illinois, 10 in Indiana, 11 in Michigan, one in Kentucky, and a few in Missouri.
The National Weather Service is forecasting up to two more damaging tornadoes Saturday in Missouri, Indiana, Ohio and Wisconsin — in addition to the upcoming system's main threat of severe weather in the central and southern U.S.
The storms may leave more damage than last year's outbreak, with one tracking to hit as strong as a EF5 twister — a once-rare monster rated at least F5 on the new Fujita scale.
"That EF5 tornado is something that could be on the ground," said Weather Channel meteorologist Eric Francis. "It would just be an absolute monster."
It's not clear if it will be strong enough to be rated on the old Fujita scale. Francis thinks that any twister that has winds of 155 miles per hour or more for at least five seconds will be considered an EF5.
