Autodesk was founded in 1982 by three computer engineers:
Fred Brooks, one of the co-inventors of the now-famous “Faster, Better, Cheaper” (FBB) mantra that revolutionized software development, who wanted to move beyond the constraints of the era’s typical time-consuming mainframe-based architecture. He was joined in 1983 by two other computer scientists: Larry Tesler, who had been a design consultant, and John Battelle, who was a chemical engineer. Tesler, who had been a staff computer scientist for Digital Equipment Corp., had worked on the development of EDX by DEC, and Battelle was an expert in numerical algorithms.
Autodesk was launched in 1983 in a garage in Cambridge, Mass., and was the first of its kind in the industry.
