History
AutoCAD was developed in response to a large request for a CAD program specifically designed for the desktop. The program is available for the Apple Macintosh (from version 2.1 onward) and for Windows (from version 2.0 onwards).
Apple AutoCAD
The original AutoCAD was developed for the Apple II series of computers in December 1982. It was one of the first such programs and was designed to fit into the smaller Apple computers. Its predecessor was called "AutoDraft" and was released in 1980.
Autodesk also later released the software for a IBM PC compatible, beginning in 1986 with the release of AutoCAD version 2.0, later in 1992 with version 2.1 and in 1994 with version 2.2.
Version 2.0 of AutoCAD, which was released in 1986, was one of the first complete CAD programs on the Apple Macintosh. The application included basic engineering and drafting functions such as working with 2D drawings, text annotation, profile and surface construction, 2D views, and sectioning. AutoCAD 2.0 supported object-oriented programming by using graphic symbols and windows to create three-dimensional solids, sections, and views. It also included the ability to load and link to other CAD programs such as MicroStation.
Version 2.1, released in 1992, made significant improvements to AutoCAD's Mac OS graphics capabilities. It included an off-screen editor, MacDraw, for 2D drafting work. Support for a full-color screen was added and the interface was modified to allow easier manipulation of toolbars and menus. AutoCAD also offered the first native 3D plotting.
Version 2.2, released in 1994, added a layer-based view system and other enhancements to the graphics and engineering capabilities. It also included enhancements to AutoLISP. AutoCAD's engineering functionality was further enhanced with the inclusion of the.dwg file format for 2D drafting.
PC AutoCAD
In 1986, Autodesk released PC AutoCAD for the IBM PC. It was one of the first products from Autodesk on the PC platform. It was released as a DOS-based CAD program with 2D and 3D plotting, sectioning, and drawing capabilities.
