Microsoft Office Migration Planning Manager allows administrators to plan the migration of an entire organization to Office 365. Administrators can define a migration scenario and create a migration plan to automate the migration of their organization to the cloud. Administrators can define a set of documents, applications, or macros that are known to migrate and discover important documents and apps as well as versioning and migration issues. To plan the migration of an organization administrators provide the Microsoft Office Migration Planning Manager with required documents, applications, and macros.
The document, macro, and application requests are stored in the database. This enables the administrator to send a list of documents, macros, and applications to a client. The client can then examine the list and pass them to the Office Migration Planning Manager (OMPM) Server which is running on the corporate network, for the verification of compatibility with Office 365. For a successful verification the data has to be sent to the OMPM Server. The Server runs a verbose version of OMPM and checks for the compatibility of the document, macro, or application with Office 365. For successful verification, the client sends a success signal to the OMPM Server which in turn deletes the request from the database. For unsuccessful verification the client sends an error signal to the OMPM Server which notifies the administrator of a possible incompatibility. The client sends requests to the OMPM Server from its local database and it runs the OMPM Server within its own session. After successfully verifying the compatibility of the document, macro, or application with Office 365, the client stores the results in its local database.
Now the administrator can run the Office Migration Planning Manager to schedule the migration. There are two ways to schedule the migration of the organization. The administrator can either specify a date and time to migrate and schedule the migration manually, or he/she can select the time-based migration where the migration is automatically scheduled. Migration can occur only during specified time-intervals. There are also two migration modes. If a document, macro, or application needs to be migrated, the administrator uses the "guided" mode and configures the process for manual migration. The administrator can also use the "random" mode for automated migration that uses a pseudo-random number generator to choose a document, macro, or application to migrate. The administrator can also choose to run the migration only on weekends.
