With its roots in the 1980s, AutoCAD has become the dominant CAD software application used by architects and civil engineers, with over five million users worldwide.
Today AutoCAD is considered a cornerstone of the drafting industry, and continues to be the industry standard for architects, engineers, contractors and construction companies. In addition to CAD, AutoCAD is used to generate drawings, bills of material, cost estimates, and production schedules.
AutoCAD is the result of research and development by a small team at Autodesk who formed a separate business unit to create AutoCAD and its sister product, AutoCAD LT, which was originally named Bluebeam.
As AutoCAD was developed, it evolved from being a simple line-based drawing application into a powerful multi-axis, multi-view, multi-layer, modeling application that allows users to construct and edit two- and three-dimensional solid and surface models. AutoCAD's model-centric, multi-user, multi-media capabilities are also highly regarded as are its high degree of customization and automated features.
Before you jump into AutoCAD, it is important that you have a working knowledge of CAD terminology, symbols, techniques, and workflow, as well as understanding of how to use CAD software tools.
AutoCAD skills are often required by architects and engineers in the following areas:
- Layout - AutoCAD is designed for the production of drawings, bills of materials and cost estimates. It is not a programming application, so there are no programming skills required.
- Grids - Geometrically oriented drawings are designed using a grid system. This allows you to add, subtract, or duplicate parts of a drawing with ease.
- BIM - BIM stands for Building Information Modeling. Any architect or engineer who uses BIM knows AutoCAD and knows how to use it.
- Layers - The drawings created using AutoCAD are built upon layers. The layering system allows the user to turn the layers off or on. Layers are used to organize your models.
- Views - AutoCAD's standard views are 2D plan view, 3D cross section, 3D elevation, 3D section, and 3D isometric. The software allows the user to select the view they wish to work in.

AutoCAD includes the ability to read and write AutoLISP, Visual LISP, Visual Basic, and VBA, and use the.NET, ActiveX, and COM API's to generate code that can be used by third-party applications. AutoCAD also provides a set of API tools, such as the ACAD APIs, that can be used to create and manage applications.
AutoCAD's documentation, online help and sample code are in many languages, including English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, and Korean.
