Macon-Bibb Commission June 6, 2023

The Macon-Bibb County Commission took steps Tuesday night to spur economic growth and urban revitalization beyond the downtown core. Commissioners agreed to deed over to the Urban Development Authority the old William P. Randall building that formerly housed the tax assessor's office at 653 Second St. and seven other nearby parcels. The land is part of what former mayor Robert Reichert's administration envisioned as Mid-City Square in his plans to enhance the Second Street Corridor. And after nearly a year and a half of being without a permanent elections supervisor, commissioners took the "interim" out of Tom Gillon's title and promoted him to the post vacated by Jeanetta Watson in January of 2022. Commissioners also signed off on the four members of the Board of Elections that were appointed by the local Democratic and Republican parties, and approved honoring the late Bibb County Sheriff's Sgt. William Gay, who contracted COVID-19 on the job and died. Here's a summation of action items from the meeting, which was not live-streamed due to technical difficulties following a technology upgrade of the audio and video system in Commission Chambers at City Hall.
