Huddersfield’s renowned industrial and manufacturing history is reflected in the collections held at Heritage Quay. These complementary collections provide detailed evidence of the products, manufacturing processes and business achievements of local industry. Just as importantly, they illustrate the fundamental impact that industry has had on the lives of the individuals and communities that they employed. The archival records of Huddersfield-based valve manufacturers Hopkinsons Limited, comprise one of the largest and most complete archives. Dating from 1824 to the 21st century, these important records tell the international story of the growth and development of British industry in this time. This theme is further revealed through the archive of Holset Engineering Company Limited, who have produced turbochargers and other engine components in Huddersfield since 1952. The enduring importance of the textile industry to the Huddersfield area is reflected through the colourful and creative fabric collections that can be found in Heritage Quay. The University Textile Sample Books collection and the Textile Fabrics of India collection contain thousands of textile samples that reveal the endless diversity of materials, techniques, styles, uses and fashions seen in the industry since the mid-19th century.
