The development of AutoCAD was spurred by a desire to create an affordable, full-featured CAD program that could be delivered to the masses. Other companies, including Moore Business Forms, had tried to create affordable CAD software. Moore Business Forms’ program was known as "Molesky"; it ran on the then-obscure, low-cost Magnavox Odyssey system, but the company’s efforts to adapt Molesky to the computer marketplace were unsuccessful.
One of the men who decided that the time was right for a modernized version of Moore’s software was Lawrence P. Spangenberg. He developed a drafting package on a DEC PDP-11 minicomputer, and it was quite successful. He later moved on to work on a more modern draft-board-style package called "Izograph."
At that time, work on AutoCAD was driven by Ken Silverman, the former chief technology officer of Nixdorf Computer (now known as Siemens Industry Sector). In addition to being AutoCAD’s primary architect, Silverman also assembled the core team at Autodesk. AutoCAD was originally code-named "OSCAD," short for "Operating System for Design." The first AutoCAD release, version 1.0, was a DOS-based, mainframe-to-desktop program. It was originally released as a beta test, with version 0.1 being the first release to actually reach market.
