This is a review of the Ph.D. dissertation The Cosmological Baryonic Tully-Fisher Relationship from our Observations of Nearby Radio Galaxies, by Jason J. Bregman (2002), completed at the University of Texas at Austin under the advisement of Dr. Nathan Smith. Jason is currently a post-doctoral researcher at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, and we are pleased to honor this work with a review.
The cosmological baryonic Tully-Fisher relationship first appears in Dr. Smith's dissertation. He uses linear regression analysis to show that the distribution of radio galaxies and emission line galaxies (at distances corresponding to a Hubble flow of 400 km/s/Mpc) is consistent with a single-parameter description in which the distances are inversely proportional to the gas mass of the galaxies. Baryonic matter is measured as the amount of HI mass and molecular gas mass present in the galaxy. The normalization is adjusted to fit with the velocity dispersions of the galaxies.

Most authors use several different measures of central black hole masses to describe the distribution of these values for a sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN). However, no specific methods have been presented for combining measurements of black hole mass and other galaxy properties to determine the most likely value. This thesis presents a likelihood function for measuring black hole mass, which is based on the measured galaxy properties and a range of plausible black hole mass values. It is written to be suitable for readers with little background in statistics.
To determine the distribution of black hole mass in galaxies, we need measurements of the black hole mass and many other galaxy properties. Since no two galaxy measurements are independent, combining the data requires a likelihood function.
