## A Quick Tour of Photoshop Elements
Photoshop Elements has been around for a long time and is intended for photographers and other image editors who like to use the programs available to create and edit photos. It contains a _selection tool,_ which makes it easier to select portions of an image so that you can crop the background out. It has an _effects filter_ so you can tweak some of the color, sharpen, or blur the image. It has basic _text_ tools for text but doesn't have any graphic design tools.
The biggest advantage of Elements is that it's a _web-ready_ program, so it creates graphics that you can use online. (Check out Chapter 15 for details about using graphics online.)
Photoshop Elements is a fairly expensive program, so most people buy a copy in addition to Photoshop to get the features and speed they need.
  A beginner can use Elements to create images, but it doesn't have as many tools as Photoshop for creating advanced images. You can use Elements to sharpen images, but you can't sharpen other parts of the image and create images with 3D effects. If you prefer to start with Elements, you can buy just Elements and use it for editing and creating graphics. (However, if you like the ability to work in layers, then Photoshop is more robust. You can do most of the same things in Elements but if you want to work in layers, you'll need to buy Photoshop.)

There are a few differences between Elements and Photoshop, the first is that when you save a file into Elements, the file doesn't get backed up, only copied. This means you have to make sure you save your edited images on a separate card or even another drive, or else you can lose them.
The second difference is that Photoshop Elements has fewer tutorials on the internet, which makes it more difficult to learn and harder to find answers to questions.
The best way I’ve found to learn Photoshop Elements is through watching tutorials.
Google’s official Elemental tutorial was one of the first I watched and it has been my best reference ever since.
There is also the Getting Started with Elements YouTube channel, but they mostly skip to the end with fast cuts and no in-between explanations.
There's also a GIMP equivalent for Elements called Krita, but it's a little different to learn.
