range of motion- movement of a joint by a person performing an exercise.
ambulation- the act of walking
assistive devices- special equipment that helps a person who is ill/disabled to perform ADLs 9; can be called assistive devices.
bed mobility- act of repositioning oneself in a bed (rolling, supine, move towards head of the bed).
body mechanics- coordinated effort of muscles, bones, and nervous system to maintain balance, posture and alignment during moving, transferring and repositioning patient.
deconditioning- loss of muscle strength from inactivity.
disuse syndrome- loss of ability to perform ADL functions as a result of a sedentary lifestyle disability.
fowlers position-patient is seated in a semi-sitting position (45-60 degrees) and may have knees either bent or straight
lateral positioning- side laying position.
mechanical lift- hydraulic lift with a sling used to move patients who cannot bear weight or have a medical condition that doesn't allow them to stand; assists with moving.
orthostatic hypotension- decrease in blood pressure related to positional/postural changes from lying to sitting/standing.
prone positioning- lying on abdomen, facing downward (head may be turned to one side)
semi-fowlers position- lying in supine position which head of the bed approx. 30 to 45 degrees.
sims position- lay on left side with right thigh and knee drawn upwards.
slider board- board used to transfer immobile patient from one surface to another while in supine.
supine positioning- laying on back, facing upwards.
transferring- action of moving a patient from one surface to another (e.g. bed to chair and vice versa).
trendelenburg- patient feet and legs are higher than the head.
high fowlers position- head elevated 90 degrees (sitting straight upright).
