Joe Biden amassed 306 electorates compared to Donald Trump's 232. People across the country went to bed on election night with Trump leading in electorates and woke up to Biden slowly catching up. Not only was Trump ahead but historically red states like Texas were blue and important swing states like Florida were a color that they did not remain when all votes were counted. Due to the pandemic, many people were too cautious to come to the polls to vote and chose to mail in their ballots. This paired with a social awakening for many Americans, especially youth, caused them to be more involved in the political process than ever-- creating a voter turnout that hasn't happened in a century. So why did it take so long for the world to know the results? It was for those same reasons that are being disputed now. Some states like Florida and Texas count their early ballots first, which came from mostly Democrats, and caused these states to be blue at first. Swing states like Michigan and Wisconsin began red because they count early/absentee ballots last, which were also mostly Democratic. This caused many swing states to switch in favor of Biden at the last minute to President Trump's dismay. 
It is completely valid to say that this election had unusual circumstances, and it would be statistically correct to say that there were errors that happened in this process too. However, people used this as an opportunity to further polarize the country-- those who supported Trump began spewing voter fraud allegations and those who supported Biden were reluctant to hear these claims out.
