File formats 
The DWG and DXF formats are for drawings and are the core file formats for AutoCAD. These formats are based on a text-based language called paper space, which is based on the Adobe PostScript language. Both formats allow the user to create nested drawing files. These formats are text-based and use nested drawing files to store geometric definitions. These formats were introduced in AutoCAD 1982 as the Direct Drawing File, and were later called Draw to PDF.
A third, non-text based format, for general, mostly vector based, geometric definitions is the native format for AutoCAD. A DGN (Drawing) file is used for designing documents, but can also be used as a source for AutoCAD. The native format is XML-based and can store arbitrary geometric objects.
