This memoir could easily be assigned to students in a middle school or high school Social Studies class.★ The conversational tone and style of the memoir immediately engaged me from the first page.★ I would enthusiastically incorporate either the entire text, or excerpts of it, in Social Studies classrooms.★ I can almost hear the Italian accent being spoken by the characters.★ It is also very educational and inspiring. Aside from acquainting me with the Italian culture, it also touched my heart in so many instances within the story. It has so many lessons to teach the reader about family, faith and the value of sacrifice and hard work in life.★ I can compare this book to a classic one that can even be made into a movie, if not a television series with various episodes. The earlier chapters alone can even be made into a children’s book. I felt so nostalgic reading it. It was as though I had been transported to my childhood days.★ It is a mix of a classic novel and a memoir, and has been effective that way.Marisa DiRuggiero works alongside her husband, D.P.
