"Marine microplastic debris: An emerging issue for food security, food safety and human health." 
This publication reviews the evidence to prove the presence of and apparent consequences of human food security, health, and food safety of microplastic. Using the research completed by Van Cauwenberghe and Janssen (2014), this article summarizes the occurrence of microplastics in shellfish and fish of commercial interest as food. While this study provides detailed quantification of the abundance of microplastics found in commercial seafood, drinking water, and various other food products, there is little information regarding how this affects the human body. "Microplastics may act as a vehicle for chemicals including styrene, toxic metals, phthalates, bisphenol A (BPA), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons" (page 343). This research article pinpoints where MPs are found in organisms and categorizing where each organism is found globally. Plastisphere “microbes and other organisms that have been found on plastic debris” raise concerns regarding the spread of invasive species and pathogens (page 343). The publication concludes that not only is microplastic contamination a concern for ecological health, but increases the vulnerability of pathogens affecting human health. This article was peer-reviewed and published to Sciencedirect. The publication reviews and compares multiple different research studies to prevent potential bias.
