AutoCAD first appeared in 1982. The early version 1.0 program was almost as simple as the current version; it had the ability to create floor, ceiling, wall, and roof plans, as well as 2D and 3D drawings. Autodesk's developers aimed the software at the architectural and construction industries, and therefore it lacked basic design tools such as the ability to create 3D objects and surfaces.
AutoCAD Version 2.0 came out in 1985. It introduced a Graphical User Interface (GUI), allowing for user-friendly operations. The keyboard became the primary input method for drawing, and a menu bar at the top of the screen with commonly used commands was added. In 1990, the program gained advanced drawing features such as object-based 2D drawing, auto-uniforming, and parameterized blocks.
AutoCAD Version 2.5 was released in 1988, with 3D drawing capability. Objects could be rotated in 3D space with up to 16 degrees of rotation. Another feature of AutoCAD 2.5 was the ability to transfer drawing styles. If a new drawing style is defined, it can be applied to multiple drawings at once and shared with others. Also introduced in this version was the ability to create 3D surface models.
In 1992, AutoCAD received AutoCAD Release 2.1, which introduced several additional 3D tools. The program could export CAD drawings to DWG or DXF files. It also introduced support for PostScript and PDF file formats. The next year, AutoCAD Release 3.0 came out, with a new look and increased functionalities. In 1995, AutoCAD Release 3.5.1 was released, with additional improvements and additions.
In 1997, AutoCAD Release 4.0 came out. It had a revised look, and new features such as profile, surface modeling, and arcs. In 2000, AutoCAD Release 4.5.1 came out, with refinements to the graphics and UI. In 2001, AutoCAD Release 5.0 was introduced, with a new look, support for custom user interface (UI) themes, and high-resolution icons. The program was also available in Adobe® Illustrator® integration format, making it much easier for users to work with files that have been created in Illustrator.
