AutoCAD was first released in December 1982, and was developed with the intention of being used on desktop PCs (i.e., PC-compatible computers). It was intended to be used in conjunction with specialized graphics hardware (a typical configuration at the time would be a black-and-white monitor, a bitmapped graphics board, and an raster graphics display driver).
In 1984, Autodesk released AutoCAD LT, a version of AutoCAD with an integrated raster graphics printer. With the release of AutoCAD on the Apple Macintosh, the number of people using AutoCAD to create drawings, and in particular architects and engineers, significantly increased. Autodesk released a version of AutoCAD for the Apple Macintosh in 1985, and it became the dominant CAD program in the architecture and engineering markets.
In 1987, Autodesk released a version of AutoCAD for the Microsoft Windows environment. This new version of AutoCAD allowed Windows users to work with AutoCAD drawings. Although it ran on Microsoft Windows 3.1 and 3.11, it was not a true desktop application. It ran in an area of the computer's display known as the Windows desktop.
