Autodesk originally intended for AutoCAD to be a single program with built-in 2D and 3D drafting capabilities. But in 1986, it released AutoCAD's first standalone version, AutoCAD 2D Drafting. In the early 1990s, Autodesk released the first versions of AutoCAD LT (a competitor to Adobe's Lightroom) and AutoCAD 2D. To compete with the then-growing market for desktop 3D visualization programs such as Pixar's LightWave, AutoCAD introduced AutoCAD 3D in 1992.
As of AutoCAD 2007, the AutoCAD family consists of AutoCAD LT (also known as AutoCAD Classic), AutoCAD LT 2009, AutoCAD Standard, AutoCAD LT 2013, AutoCAD 2014, AutoCAD 2015, AutoCAD 2016 and AutoCAD LT 2017.

History of AutoCAD's design from inception to date
AutoCAD started out as a proprietary raster graphics program designed for use with AutoLISP on the Apple II platform. The original AutoCAD was designed by Burt Snyder, then at the University of Utah, and was originally marketed by AutoLISP Software, Inc., a consulting and programming firm established by Snyder and John McPartland. The first version of AutoCAD was released in 1980 and had only simple 2D drafting capabilities.
In 1981, the firm released the first version of AutoCAD 2D Drafting, which was also sold as a stand-alone product and was an evolution from AutoCAD 1D Drafting, which had only 2D drafting capabilities. The firm's management decided to release AutoCAD as a proprietary program.

AutoCAD LT products 
AutoCAD LT was originally made for CAD and drafting. In later versions, it also supports the import and export of DWG and DXF documents. AutoCAD LT can import and export native CAD files from other drawing programs like AutoCAD, ArcGIS, MicroStation, Trimble BIMserver, Assemble and others. In addition, AutoCAD LT can also be integrated with third-party software or applications like: Aspire PLEX, FDT, KOMO, and ARCH.
The Autodesk TV Board 
AutoCAD LT has a TV Board that allows connecting to a specific set-top box. The TV Board is able to receive and send commands. The TV board can be used with a set-top box or set-top box with keyboard.
Licensing and annual release 
AutoCAD LT does not have a perpetual license option; however, it is available with a one-time payment and then an annual subscription. It has been discontinued as of March 24, 2013.
The licensed version of AutoCAD LT is compatible with the Autodesk Apps (Exchange) in general and the Autodesk Subscription Apps for AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD Classic.
The latest version is AutoCAD LT 2011.
