AutoCAD originated as a 16-bit desktop app that was developed and marketed by Autodesk as an alternative to commercially available other CAD programs such as AutoCAD LT. Since 1990, AutoCAD has been the world’s leading professional-level 2D drafting and design application.
The original release of AutoCAD in 1982 was one of the first applications of a professional-level drafting and design tool for the microcomputer market. It was one of the first commercial CAD applications to be developed entirely for the microcomputer.

 AutoCAD 2015 was the first version of AutoCAD that used a new main user interface framework called the Graphical User Interface (GUI), which was intended to be easier to use and to work with for more experienced users of the program. The old interface, which was called "traditional", was left intact, but was not supported in new versions. The new GUI is known as the ribbon and is composed of groups of tabs: Tabs include Properties, Draw, Annotate, Info, History, Simulation, Documentation, Macros and SQL for drawing database applications.
 Starting in version 2005, AutoCAD introduced enhanced features such as T-bar, floating, custom shortcut keys and the ability to place 3D objects inside 2D drawing. These features did not replace the previous ribbon.
