Well, I’ve got news for Mr. Staver:
Mr. Trump is absolutely right that we should consider the idea of arming teachers. If you haven’t heard of this idea, it’s the conclusion of a 2012 study commissioned by the NRA and led by Stephen P. Halbrook, a research fellow at the John Lott Self-Defense Research Center. The study concluded that armed teachers could save lives — as long as the teachers were actually armed.
Granted, this proposal is highly controversial. There are a number of rational arguments against the idea, including the risk of exposing teachers to liability should something tragic happen, plus the $1.5 million price tag to equip and train each teacher and the fact that a teacher’s firearm could easily be removed, used to harm, and then returned to the teacher. There’s also the danger of arming teachers in a society already so legislatively stacked against individuals seeking to protect themselves.
