On August 30, 2019, Roblox hit another milestone. Half of the child population of the United States used the site, according to a study by Common Sense Media, the largest non-profit that studies children’s media and entertainment.
The game platform is free to use and play. However, some of the developer's content requires payment. Users can also buy Robux, which can be used to buy virtual items in their games. In April 2018, Roblox launched its first branded clothing line under the name Fan Shop.
History
Webtoon Plus, the original creators of Roblox, launched the Roblox website in November 2004. It provided a platform for users to create online content for their friends.
Roblox was originally a small game platform, and hosted content created by small independent developer teams. However, Roblox's user base grew over time, and the platform became the premier destination for children's video games.
Development
As of January 2014, the company had about 30 employees.
The original developers behind Roblox, Webtoon Plus and their shareholders, had sold the company to Diversified Information Technology, Inc. (Diversified) in 2008, and had remained on the board of directors of the company. After a year, Diversified decided to close down
