That’s the conclusion of a team led by astronomer Daniel Ceverino of the University of California, Santa Cruz, who ran simulations of the possible history of our galaxy and determined that the collision could have occurred about 3 billion years ago.
“It’s a very old merger, and there’s no doubt about it,” says astronomer Andrea Ghez of the University of Arizona, Tucson, who was not involved in the study. “We’ve known for a long time that the Milky Way is on the collision path with the M31, but it’s exciting to finally get a proof.”
Ghez and her colleagues had previously found evidence in the form of gas clouds and star clusters that the galaxies have collided. But evidence of a merger, in which the two galaxies undergo violent collisions and combine into one massive galaxy, is still missing.
The Milky Way and M31 are thought to have been one galaxy at one point, but then they broke up when the dark matter in their spirals went haywire. That event took place about 10 billion years ago, so it’s been a long time since the Milky Way and M31 first collided.
But the timescale of the collision isn’t the only question scientists have been trying to answer. For instance, the Milky Way has a large number of dark matter satellites. Most models of the Milky Way have the dark matter condense into clumps, which form a flattened disk around the main galaxy. But in order for the dark matter to exist in clumps, the Milky Way has to have been much smaller.
“If the dark matter was condensing into clumps, we’d expect to see an exponential decline in the number of stars in the outer regions of the galaxy,” says Ghez. “But we see a steady increase, and we have so many of these satellite galaxies.”
The solution may lie in the Milky Way’s spiral arms. Because of those arms, the dark matter in the Milky Way has a three-dimensional distribution, rather than a flat disk.
