"They are at risk of not being able to make ends meet," said Brett Almeida, a workers' compensation law attorney at Blank, Rome, LLP. "The ultimate question is: Is that going to happen?"
If so, workers could end up forced to take out larger mortgages on their homes to support their families, or fall behind on their monthly payments, potentially causing their homes to go into foreclosure, he said.
In a downturn like this, workers become less attractive to the employers who are forced to cut back on employee benefits, Almeida said.
"The employers are seeing the cost of doing business go up," he said. "They are going to want to see cuts in the labor pool. The more workers they have, the better it is for them."
A Michigan Service Center analysis of federal data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics in the first half of 2013 shows there were 1.2 million households with a member working full time in the state. At the same time, there were 1.1 million people working part time. The two totals combined represent 31.2 percent of all Michigan households.
During that same period, the number of people who were unemployed in Michigan was just over 1 million.
Michigan has seen unemployment numbers climb since the beginning of 2011, when the state's unemployment rate was 5.3 percent and the national unemployment rate stood at 8.3 percent. In June of 2012, it was 6.8 percent unemployment in Michigan and 9.5 percent nationally, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. As of July 2013, the statewide unemployment rate is 7.6 percent and the national rate is 7.8 percent.
National data also shows that while the number of people with full-time jobs increased in Michigan during the first half of 2013, the number of part-time jobs increased more than the number of full-time jobs.
