In the early days of CAD software, it was typically engineers or architects who created their own proprietary software applications for their needs. Engineers such as the architect Carl Benning and engineer Dale W. McGonigle developed the first CAD software that allowed users to construct drawings directly on their desktop using a graphics tablet. Those engineers started AutoCAD as a way to automate their desktop drawing workflows.
Over the years, the AutoCAD products developed by the various engineers have evolved into something more powerful and robust, and AutoCAD is today the most widely used CAD software application in the world.
History of AutoCAD

AutoCAD was originally developed by engineers Carl Benning and Dale W. McGonigle. The two engineers released AutoCAD on May 24, 1982 as a desktop CAD application for the Apple II, IBM PC/XT, and the Macintosh computers.
The name of the application was derived from “Automatic CAD,” the goal of AutoCAD in that era, when most CAD programs at the time required CAD operators to manually enter and update data. The term AutoCAD also describes the “Auto” function that automates most common drawing tasks.
The original version of AutoCAD was written in BASIC. In the very first versions, it supported the Apple II and the IBM PC/XT computers, but the Macintosh computers were not supported initially.

The use of the variables and functions in a drawing is also demonstrated in AutoCAD software by the following example. In the following example, the name of the variable plotheight is declared and set to 70. The print function is then called and plotted using the variable plotheight.
