Ageing out: A medical approach to the EU aging demographic

Abstract: With Europe birthrates declining, an aging population is leading the EU towards an uncertain, but possibly profitable, future. With an aging population comes a necessity to create new programs in an effort to take care of the older generation as well as bring in a new workforce. This takes a medical approach to ensure a proper quality of life while protecting economic stability in a two front approach. Many countries have extremely high populations of elderly citizens comparatively to younger citizens, resulting in the risk of suffering at the hands of an economic catastrophe. As a prototype to future programs, a program should be tested in one of the most highly affected countries in the EU. Italy, with an elderly population of 23.2%, would make a great testing ground for future endeavors.
