AutoCAD was originally developed for the 1985 DOS version of the personal computer, the only one of its kind at the time. It was initially released to AutoDesk in 1988 and has continued to be improved since. The drawing software was originally developed as a 2D drafting and architectural design tool, but soon morphed into a whole suite of design tools. 
The first version of AutoCAD in production had been the 1988 Release 1 (RC1) when Autodesk purchased Rogue Wave Software and renamed it AutoDesk.
